Michigan’s Limited Licensed Professional Counselor (LLPC) license allows you to practice under the supervision of a licensed professional counselor while you complete the experience and requirements for full LPC licensure.

Apply for Your Limited License
Complete the online application through MiPLUS.
You will need to submit fees, a background check, Good Moral Character questions, transcripts, training certificates, and a Professional Disclosure Statement. Your license cannot be issued without this statement on file.

Choose a Qualified Clinical Supervisor
You must practice under the supervision of a licensed professional counselor (LPC) in good standing who meets Michigan’s supervision requirements. Your supervisor must sign your Professional Disclosure Statement and confirm how they meet the state’s qualification standards.

Begin Supervised Practice
Once your limited license is active, your supervised experience can begin. For the master’s pathway, you need 3,000 hours of post-degree experience over at least two years with 100 hours of supervision. For the doctoral pathway, you need 1,500 hours over at least one year with 50 hours of supervision.

Make the Most of Supervision
Supervision is where you grow. Bring real cases, questions, and concerns. Focus areas may include case consultation, treatment planning, documentation review, ethics, and skill development. Stay organized and track your hours consistently.

Complete Your Exam Requirement
Depending on your pathway, you’ll need to pass the NCE, CRCC, or NCMHCE exam. Your score report must be sent directly from the testing agency.

Prepare for Full LPC Licensure
After you complete your supervised hours and other requirements, you will submit your Counseling Work Experience form along with other required documents to apply for full LPC licensure.

Keep Your LLPC Active
Your limited license renews annually and may be renewed no more than 10 times. You can apply for renewal no sooner than 90 days before your license expires.

Supervised experience earned before your limited license cannot be counted.
